Tournament Format

A. 8 x 8 Othello

1. Overview

Three (3) days of tournament.

The aim of the first two days of competition is

  • To select 8 players who compete in the 3rd day's competition for the individual title.
  • To select 2 female players who compete in the final on the 3rd day for the individual title of Women's class.
  • To determine the Champion for Under 12 class.

2. Playing System for the first two days of the primary tournament

The primary seven rounds will be played on the first day and the primary six rounds on the second day. So, each player will play total 13 rounds of the primary tournament.

The OWC system will be used for the first two days of primary tournament.

  • Once a game is finished, both players should sign a transcript sheet thereby showing they agree on the final score and hand it to a tournament official.
  • Pairings for the primary1st round will be fixed by drawing at the welcome party.
  • The top 8 finishers of the primary tournament can compete for the quarter-final tournament held on the third day.
  • The top 2 finishers among female players of total 13 rounds of the primary tournament can compete on the women's final match held on the third day.

However, in the case one of the female players will be the top 8 finishers of the primary tournament, Women's final match will be cancelled and such female player who is one of the top 8 finishers of the primary tournament will become the Women's Champion of the OWC.

Also, in the event that two or more female players will become top 8 finishers of the primary tournament, or none of the female players remains in the top 8 finishers, the Women's final match will be held and the top 2 female players of the primary tournament will be compete for the Women's Champion of the OWC.

In the case one or more female players compete for the semi-final tournament, the women's final match will not be held. The female player who is the top finisher of the final tournament among female participants will be the Women's Champion of the OWC.

  • The top finisher among under 12 year's player of the primary tournament will be the Champion of the U-12 class of the OWC.
  • The number of winning games has priority, and if the same number of winning games, a player with larger OWC point serves as a higher rank.
  • However, in the following cases, play-off games will be held. These are to be one match.
In the case of ~ Play-off game
The 8th place player and the 9th place player have the same number of the winning games. Play-off between 8th and 9th place player.
The 7th place player to the 10th place player, they have the same number of the winning games. Play-off between 7th and 10th, and between 8th and 9th.
The 6th place player to the 11th place player, they have the same number of the winning games. Play-off between 6th and 11th ~, and between 8th and 9th.
The 5th place player to the 12th place player, they have the same number of the winning games. Play-off between 5th and 12th ~, and between 8th and 9th.
The 4th place player to the13th place player, they have the same number of the winning games. Play-off between 4th and 13th ~, and between 8th and 9th.
The 3rd place player to the 14th place player, they have the same number of the winning games. Play-off between 3rd and 14th ~,and between 8th and 9th
The 2nd place player to the15th place player, they have the same number of the winning games. Play-off between 2nd and 15th ~, and between 8th and 9th.
The 1st place player to the16th place player, they have the same number of the winning games. Play-off between 1st and 16th ~, and between 8th and 9th.
  • There is no draw game on the primary tournament.
  • Before starting the game, a player must choose either the right to choose the color or the right to be the winner in case of the draw game. Player's choice of either the right to choose the color or the right to be winner in case of the draw game will be determined by the coin toss by the judge.
  • Digital Clocks will be used to time all games at the tournament. At the first two days of the primary tournament, each player shall have 25 minutes to complete all his/her moves per game. In case of the play-off game at the end of these two days of the primary tournament, each player shall have 25 minutes per game.
    If a player's flag falls, he/she will lose the game immediately.

3. Playing System of the third day

The aim of the third day of competition is:
To determine the Champion of the OWC and the ranking of the 1st to 8th place of the OWC.
To determine the Women's Champion of the OWC.
The third day of competition will be organized as follows :
There will be 4 quarter-final games, one played between the 1st and 8th place player from the primary tournament, and the other between the 2nd and 7th place player, the 3rd and 6th place player and between the 4th and 5th place player. One game only.
There will be 2 semi-finals among four players who won the quarter-finals. One game only.
There will be a final game, organized as a best of 2 games match between the winners of two semi-finals, and a one game play-off for third place between the two losing semi-finalists.
1) The quarter-final
Digital Clocks will be used to time all games at the quarter-final. Each player shall have 25 minutes per game. If a player's flag falls, he/she will lose the game immediately.
The higher place players in the primary tournament have both the right to choose a color and the right to be the winner in case of the draw game. Players who lose on the 1st game of the quarter-final cannot compete for the next game. The ranking of the 5th to the 8th place will be decided by the result of the primary tournament.
2) The semi-final games and the play-off game for third place
At the semi-final and the play-off, each player shall have 25 minutes per game. If a player's flag falls, he/she will lose the game immediately.
There is no draw game on the semi-final and the play-off.
Before starting the game, a player must choose either the right to choose the color or the right to be the winner in case of the draw game. Player's choice of either the right to choose the color or the right to be winner in case of the draw game will be determined by the coin toss by the judge.
3) The final
These are to be 2 games.
At the final, each player shall have 30 minutes per game.
If a player's flag falls, he/she loses the game and his/her opponent is awarded a win regardless of the position of the board.
Both players are given 2 extra minutes. The game is then continued with the true final score standing, save that the non-defaulting player is guaranteed a least a 33-31 win. If the defaulting player's flag falls a second time, the game is scored 64-0. If the flag of the non-defaulting player falls after having been given two extra minutes, the player who first defaulted loses the game with a 31-33.
There is draw game on the final.
Before starting the first game, a player must choose a color. Player's choice of the right to choose the color will be determined by the coin toss by the judge.
At the end of 2 games the player having more number of winning games in the match shall be declared the winner. If after 2 games the two players have the same number of winning game, the total number of discs in the 2 games shall be used to determine the winner. In case of a further tie, the higher place player in the primary tournament shall be declared the winner.
4) The final of the Women's Class
One game only.
At the final of the Women's Class, each player shall have 25 minutes per game. If a player's flag falls, she will lose the game immediately.
There is no draw game on the final of the Women's Class.
The higher place player in the primary tournament has the right to choose a color.
In the case of draw, the higher place player in the primary tournament will be the champion of the Othello World Cup of the Women's class.

B. The 8 stars Othello and The Grand Othello

The 8 stars Othello tournament and The Grand Othello tournament will be held on the third day without the top 8 players in the primary tournament and the female players who compete for the final game of the Women's class.

  • At those tournaments, the JOA system will be used.
  • Pairings for the 1st round will be fixed by drawing on the day.
  • According to the number of participant, 4 or5 games will be held on both tournaments.
  • At those tournaments, each player shall have 30 minutes per game. If a player's flag falls, he/she will lose the game immediately.
  • There is no draw game on those tournaments.
  • Before starting the game, a player must choose either the right to choose the color or the right to be the winner in case of the draw game. Player's choice of either the right to choose the color or the right to be winner in case of the draw game will be determined by the coin toss by the judge.

C. The Mini Othello = 6x6 Othello

The Mini Othello tournament will be held on the fourth day.
In this tournament, players can't participate in only less than 12 years old.

  • At this tournament, the JOA system will be used.
  • Pairings for the 1st round will be fixed by drawing on the day.
  • According to the number of participant, 4 or5 games will be held on this tournament.
  • At this tournament, each player shall have 10 minutes per game. If a player's flag falls, he/she will lose the game immediately.
  • There is no draw game on this tournament.
  • Before starting the game, a player must choose either the right to choose the color or the right to be the winner in case of the draw game. Player's choice of either the right to choose the color or the right to be winner in case of the draw game will be determined by the coin toss by the judge.

D. Miracle 5

The Miracle 5 tournament will be held on the fourth day.
There are 3 games of Einstein, Attack and Sky-guest in the Miracle 5 tournament.

  • At those games, the JOA system will be used.
  • The pairings for the first round shall be determined by drawing on the day.
  • According to the number of participant, each 4 or5 games will be held on those tournaments.
  • At those games each, player shall have 20 minutes per game. If a player's flag falls, he/she will lose the game immediately.
  • There is no draw game on those games.
  • Before starting the game, a player must choose either the right to choose the color or the right to be the winner in case of the draw game. Player's choice of either the right to choose the color or the right to be winner in case of the draw game will be determined by the coin toss by the judge.
